stewedlogohighres_smallIn less than two years stewed! was a national brand selling in Harvey Nichols, Thornton’s Budgens, Ocado and Waitrose.

Now in year 3, stewed! is also in over 200 Sainsbury's stores across the country and showing no signs of slowing down.

The Olive Grows is proud to have played a part in the growth of its first client, which kicked off production at the kitchens back in the summer of 2008 after starting the business from home.

 

“Right from the start, one of our key objectives was to supply our stews to national retailers.  We also took the early strategic decision to outsource production as soon as possible.   As a result, it simply wouldn’t have been a sensible business decision to invest in our own premises when we knew it was only a matter of time before we outsourced.  However, we still needed to manufacture for our existing clients.  The Olive Grows 'kitchens meant we were able to avoid huge investment in premises of our own."

Alan's story is an excellent example of the importance of evaluating major strategic decisions, before making investment commitments that cannot be easily reversed or that eat up all available capital.

By undertaking the manufacturing themselves for the first year, the team was able to refine the production processes and be in a much better position to find the right manufacturer and negotiate the right price.

The Olive Grows enabled stewed! to free up available capital for investment in marketing, packaging and brand building, thereby accelerating the company's rate of growth.
